Shambala Movie Review
Looking for a commercial hit after a quiet spell, hero Aadi Sai Kumar changes his genre this time, presenting himself to audiences with Shambala, a period mystery thriller. The film generated some buzz with its trailer and promotional materials. But did Shambala captivate the audience? Did Aadi Sai Kumar score a hit? Let’s find out in the review.
Plot: This is a period story set in 1980 in a village called Shambala. A meteorite falls from the sky into this village. Since then, the villagers believe that unexpected events and calamities occur there. Consequently, strange incidents subtly take place in the village.
Seemingly out of nowhere, someone in the village behaves as if possessed, murders people, and then commits suicide. They live in fear, believing all this is happening because of that cursed meteorite.
In such circumstances, the government sends a geologist and scientist, Vikram (Aadi Sai Kumar), who believes in science and not in God, to the village of Shambala to submit a report on the ongoing developments.
What kind of situations did Vikram, a man of science, have to face from the villagers? Did Vikram uncover the secrets behind the incidents in the village? What is Devi’s (Archana Iyer) connection to this story? What really happened in this tale of science and superstition? To find out, you must watch the movie.
Analysis: Currently, audiences are favoring period dramas, such mystery thrillers, and mythological films. Therefore, the director of this film has also chosen a very weighty story, mixing horror, mythology, ancient lore, gods, and science.
The film will impress audiences if it explains all these elements without causing any confusion. In this regard, the director of Shambala has achieved a certain degree of success. He establishes the story in the village of Shambala and attempts to draw viewers into the narrative by detailing the incidents that occur there and the secrets behind them.

However, scenes sometimes feel repetitive, as if reiterating the same point, which can be boring. Yet, just then, another interesting scene arrives, pulling the viewer back into the story.
The developments after the hero’s entry into the village are interesting from a horror perspective. The director attempted to scare the audience with the scenes following the spirit’s possession of the characters played by Ravi Varma and Meesala Lakshman. Particularly, the sugarcane field scenes in this episode are thrilling.
However, in the part that drives the story forward, one gets the feeling that the director stretched out some scenes. It also seems included are scenes where the hero does not react even when murders happen right before his eyes. The first ten minutes of the film are interesting.
After that, some scenes test our patience, but by the interval, the director increased the intrigue and interest surrounding the mystery. The scenes revealing the history of the village goddess, the meteorite fall, and the ancient secret behind it were all brought to the screen in the second half. In this aspect, the director showcased his talent.
Throughout the second half, he never let the grip slacken, giving priority to powerful scenes. Particularly, the flag (Pataka) scenes became key to this film. By linking them to a small child, he also cultivated emotion in the climax. However, the film’s ending did not feel convincing. A sense of dissatisfaction remains, as if the director could not fully convey what he intended through this story.
Cast Performances: Aadi Sai Kumar impressed as Vikram. His getup and maturity in acting were striking. He appeared powerful in the action sequences. Archana Iyer’s role did not offer much scope for performance. Ravi Varma and Meesala Lakshman were frightening. Madhunandan was impressive in the constable role.
All other artists did justice to their roles. Sricharan Pakala’s background music was not particularly memorable. Praveen K. Bangari enhanced Shambala with his skilled cinematography. Director Ugandhar Muni, had he taken a little more time on the writing front for such a weighty story, the impact in the scenes would have been more evident. However, his talent is apparent in the making. The production values are high.
Final Verdict: With a story that progresses with intrigue and narration, Shambala offers audiences a decent thriller experience.
