End of an Era: 92-Year-Old Legend Bill Thorn Retires from the Peachtree Road Race
The Peachtree Road Race started in 1970, and Bill Thorn has participated every year.
According to Atlanta Track Club’s statement, this year Thorn will be stepping down at the age of 92. No one else has joined every race since it first began, except for him.

To avoid worry about not finishing, Bill Thorn advised to focus on completing the task. “I’m going into a new era.”
At this year’s race on July 4, Thorn will be chauffeured down the route as an honored Grand Marshal. Then he will cross the finish line on foot. Thorn’s name will also be engraved on the Peachtree Cup, and race participants can thank him at a Peachtree Health & Fitness Expo signing wall.
The statement noted that Thorn‘s coaching experience spanned over 64 years in football. Additionally he coached in track and field and cross country. Even now he dedicates almost every day of the week working out for about two hours. He even participated in the Peachtree Road Race virtually during COVID-19, aided with a walker.
The race director of the Peachtree, Rich Kenah, is confident that if Bill had attempted his 54th try, he would have accomplished it without a doubt since that’s what he’s known for.
