Gwyneth Paltrow Opens Up About Popularizing the Term “Conscious Uncoupling”

In a recent Instagram Q&A, Gwyneth Paltrow claimed that she was responsible for spreading the phrase “conscious uncoupling.”

When Paltrow used the word to characterise her split from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, with whom she had two children, and subsequent divorce, she received a lot of anger.

The word was first used in 2009 by Katherine Woodward Thomas to describe a more optimistic perspective to divorce in which separated spouses can continue to be close friends and value their shared memories.

Paltrow is glad that she pioneered the idea despite the backlash and thinks she had a hand in the cultural movement towards easier divorce and separation transitions.
