Ballroom Dance Icon and TV Personality Len Goodman Dies at 78
Len Goodman, a well-known ballroom dancer and a veteran judge on ‘Dancing With The Stars’, died at the age of 78 from bone cancer.
Goodman, who served as a judge on the British edition of the programme “Strictly Come Dancing,” passed away quietly on Saturday in a hospice in Kent, England, surrounded by his loved ones, according to his agent Jackie Gill.
In a tribute to Goodman, BBC Director-General Tim Davie praised him as “a wonderful, warm entertainer who was adored by millions… and felt like a member of everyone’s family.”
Before going into television, Goodman had a fruitful career as a competitive ballroom dancer. He won the British Championships in the 1970s, and in his late 20s, he decided to retire to start a dancing studio.
Goodman served as the chief judge on both “Dancing With The Stars” from 2005 until 2022 and “Strictly Come Dancing” from its inception in 2004 until 2016. In acknowledgment of his extraordinary achievements to dance, he received the Carl Alan Award. He also authored several books, including the 2009 biography “Better Late Than Never: From Barrow Boy to Ballroom.”
After serving as a judge on “Dancing With The Stars” for all bar two seasons, Goodman announced his resignation from the show in November of last year. He desired to spend more time in Britain with his family and grandchildren.
Many others were inspired by Goodman’s ascent to stardom in his final years. He was raised in London’s East End, where he later worked as a welder in the London Docks after helping out at his father’s fruit and vegetable shop.
His wife, son, and two grandchildren are still alive.
